Little Rann Of Kutch

The Little Rann of Kutch is a unique and expansive salt marsh located in the Indian state of Gujarat. Covering an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometers, it is a remarkable and ecologically significant region. One of the most notable features of the Little Rann of Kutch is the presence of the endangered Indian Wild Ass, also known as the Ghudkhar.

Wildlife OF LRK

Some of the prominent wildlife species found in this region include:

  1. Indian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus khur): The Indian Wild Ass, also known as the Ghudkhar, is one of the most iconic species of the Little Rann of Kutch. This rare and endangered subspecies of the Asiatic Wild Ass is well adapted to the arid conditions and is known for its swift speed and endurance.

  2. Desert Fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla): The desert fox, a subspecies of the red fox, is found in the Little Rann of Kutch. It has a sandy-colored coat that helps it blend seamlessly into the arid landscape.

  3. Indian Gazelle (Gazella bennettii): Also known as the Chinkara, the Indian Gazelle is a graceful and agile antelope species that thrives in the desert and semi-arid regions of India, including the Little Rann of Kutch.

  4. Indian Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes): The Indian wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf and is found in the grasslands and scrub forests of the region. They are skilled predators, preying on various smaller mammals.

  5. Indian Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena): The Little Rann of Kutch is also home to the Indian Striped Hyena, a scavenger species known for its distinctive black and white striped coat.

  6. Desert Cat (Felis silvestris ornata): The desert cat is a small wild cat species adapted to arid environments and can be spotted in the Little Rann of Kutch.

  7. Birds: The region attracts numerous migratory birds during the monsoon and winter months. Various waterfowl, cranes, flamingos, and raptors can be seen in the shallow lakes and marshes that form during the wet season.

  8. Reptiles: Several reptile species inhabit the Little Rann of Kutch, including the Indian cobra, Russell's viper, saw-scaled viper, and numerous species of lizards.

  9. Invertebrates: The salt flats and marshes of the Little Rann of Kutch are also home to various invertebrates, including several species of crustaceans and insects.
